Mr. Donald Gene Lawrence, age 93, of the Union Hill/Morgan City community in Morgan County, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on July 22, 2025. Donald was born on November 18, 1931, in Morgan County, Alabama, the son of Eugene Franklin Lawrence and Mary Margaret Lemley Lawrence.
A proud United States Army veteran, Donald served his country with honor, afterward he began a long and respected career at Redstone Arsenal, where he worked as a supply clerk. Donald married the love of his life, Dorothy Nell Culbreath Lawrence, and together they shared 68 years as of her passing June, 2019.
Donald was an avid enthusiast of A Model vehicles and thoroughly enjoyed attending car shows. He enjoyed woodworking and while using his skills and talent he created many birdhouses and other woodworking projects. He was a steadfast Alabama football fan and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Donald was a country boy at heart and loved having his own garden where he could grow his own vegetables.
Donald’s family will continue to carry on in his tradition. Though he will be greatly missed, his family, friends and all of the Union Hill/Morgan City communities will remember him and his legacy.
Family members left behind to cherish their memories include: son, Donnie Lawrence; daughter, Sylvia Jean Short; grandchildren; Megan Johnson (Eric) and Christopher Short: great grandchildren, Alyssa Johnson, Canaan Johnson, Taylor Short, Abby Short, Gracie Short and Jake Short.
Family members previously deceased are: wife, Dorothy Nell Lawrence; mother, Mary Lemley Lawrence; father, Eugene Lawrence; daughter, Deborah Goodson; brothers, Oral D. Lawrence; sisters, Lillian Hoxey and Virginia Cobb.
Services for Donald will be Sunday, July 27, 2025 at Brindlee Mountain Chapel in Morgan City. Family, friends and guests will gather for visitation beginning at 1:00pm until the funeral service begins at 2:00pm. Brother Robby Boyd and Brother Eldridge Criscoe will officiate. Honored to serve as pallbearers and escorting Donald to his final resting place in Union Grove Cemetery will be Terry Hamilton, Dean Byess, Robin Kent, Keith Martin, Jeff Campbell and Barry Brazelton. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel and Brindlee Mountain Chapel are honored to assist with arrangements.
