Don Allen South, 64, of Hartselle went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 9 at Huntsville Hospital following an accident at his home. Don was born in Hartselle on March 30, 1961 to Thurman and Rachel South, the youngest of a large and happy farming family. Although the “baby” of the family, Don eventually grew to be the biggest of the five tall South siblings. He graduated from Hartselle High School in 1979 and soon went to work at Copeland Industries, where he remained employed for over thirty years. Most recently, he was employed in the cafeteria at Decatur High School. A man of quiet and steadfast faith, Don served faithfully as a deacon at East Highland Baptist Church and as a Trail Master in Trail Life Troop AL-0412.
Don’s memory is cherished by his wife, Jackie Johnson South; his son, David South (Erin) of Madison; his daughter, Hannah Keenum (David) of Danville; four grandchildren, Samuel South, Joshua South, Owen Keenum, and Caleb Keenum; his sister Carol South (Jimmy Harris) of Decatur; his brother Mike South (Sheri) of Loveland, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thurman South and Rachel Bates South, his sister Cheryl Higginbotham, and his brother Danny (surviving spouse Debbie).
Don’s family will receive visitors and friends on Friday, December 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Peck Funeral Home in Hartselle. The funeral service will be held at East Highland Baptist Church on Saturday, December 13 at 1:00 pm.
