DECATUR-Top archers from around the world will be in Decatur July 20-24, 2022, competing at the USA Archery JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) Target Nationals where an estimated 700 archers are registered to compete. The prestigious tournament will be held at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex located in Decatur, Ala. and the event is open to the public.
The JOAD Target Nationals is sanctioned by USA Archery and is open to youth archers in the recurve, compound, barebow and fixed pins divisions. The national event consists of a double 72-arrow qualification round, shot over two days; team rounds; and head-to-head match play (elimination rounds). Tuesday, July 19 is an unofficial practice day and a kick-off social is planned for Wednesday, July 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ingalls Harbor Pavilion. Qualifying begins Thursday, July 21 at 8 a.m. with elimination and final rounds on Saturday, July 23.
During the JOAD Target Nationals, hundreds of archers from 8 to 20 years old from around the country come together to compete for medals and college scholarships. Scholarships are offered directly from colleges and universities, allowing college-bound young men and women an opportunity to continue participating in archery while attending school. Scholarships are offered to top finishing male and female archers in varying recurve, compound, barebow and fixed pins divisions.
JOAD is a nationwide program where certified coaches develop youth archers in USA Archery Youth Clubs. Youth archers with aspirations to represent the United States at the Olympic, Paralympic and World Championship levels need to earn national ranking points at JOAD Target Nationals as well as other qualifying events.
