David Walter Phillips, a lifelong Huntsvillian, was born at Huntsville Hospital on September 10, 1950, the second son of Lois Fundinger Phillips and Thomas Martin Phillips, Sr. David was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Thomas Martin Phillips, Jr. David passed away at home, on his beloved “Monte Sano”, on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020. It was his wish to be cremated and interred in the Memorial Garden at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity.
David graduated from Huntsville High School in the Class of 1968 and then attended Auburn University, graduating in 1972. David was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and received his degree from the School of Agriculture.
After graduation, David worked on the production of US Army training films at Redstone Arsenal. He then spent the majority of his career working at the Von Braun Civic Center.
He was a devoted member of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity, where he volunteered at the front desk, assisted the Garden Guild, helped with the farmers’ market and sang with a voice apparently too deep to join the choir. He was a charter member of the Pin Hook Creek Yacht Club and also was a longtime member of the Monte Sano Swimming Pool, where he spent many a summer evening regaling his friends with his extensive knowledge of history, especially of Huntsville, Madison County and his extended family’s goings on.
A kind, intelligent man, he loved long hikes on the Mountain, playing the piano and reading.
David is survived by his brother, Marshall Wilson Phillips, of Auburn; his sister, Marian Phillips Mancini (Jay), of Ross, California; three nephews, David Thomas Phillips (Jenn) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Martin Mancini and John David Mancini, of Ross, California; his aunt, Harvilee Phillips Harbarger; many cousins on both sides of the family; and his devoted friends. We shall always love him and miss him dearly.
No services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials are made to The Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 208 Eustis Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama 35801.
