David Joe Mooney, a man known for his quiet strength, deep faith, and devotion to family, was born to the late Coy and Rena Flatt Mooney in Tennessee on September 25, 1938, one of twelve children. David passed away peacefully on the afternoon of January 21, 2026, at his residence in Alamo.
In his early years, David worked for Ford Motor Company in Ohio. In the late 1970s, he returned to Tennessee and made his home in Alamo. It was there that he answered a calling to serve others, dedicating many years of his life as a pastor. Since returning to Tennessee, David faithfully served as pastor of Pentecostal Tabernacle Church of God in Alamo, Tennessee. Through his ministry, David touched countless lives, offering guidance, compassion, and steadfast faith. He was a man of strong beliefs who loved the Lord and cherished his family above all else.
David shared over sixty-three years of marriage with the love of his life, Dorothy Tucker Mooney. Their marriage was a testament to commitment and devotion. Dorothy preceded him in death in 2022, and David carried her memory with him always.
He leaves behind his beloved children, daughter Celia (Daniel) Word and son Bruce Mooney. David was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren—Krystal Word, Kraig Word, Samuel Mooney, and Joshua Mooney—who affectionately called him PawPaw. His legacy continues through his seven great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Kamron, Karson, Kayson, Samuel, Kayden, and Taylor. He is also survived by his three sisters, Reba Nell Taylor, Nancy Barrett, and Barbara Mosier.
In addition to his parents and wife, David was preceded in death by his cherished granddaughter, Kristen Word, and eight siblings: Ruby Bonnin, Eual Mooney, Richard Mooney, James Mooney, Ilene Turner, Odell Mooney, Patricia Waddle, and Reba Lynn Bradley.
The Mooney family will receive friends at Pafford Funeral Home on Thursday, January 29, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, January 30, in the chapel of Pafford Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Henderson County.
David Joe Mooney will be remembered as a faithful servant, a loving husband and father, and a PawPaw whose love and guidance will live on through generations.
