Darwin Lee Baker – Obituary

Darwin Lee Baker, of Huntsville, passed away Saturday at his home in The Villages, Florida. He was born in Spearfish, South Dakota to Charles and Alberta Baker.  Shortly after birth, he and his mother returned to Fonda, Iowa. Darwin grew up and went to school in Fonda.  After college, Darwin lived in Winston Salem, North Carolina where he met and married Jane Purnell.  In 1963, the family moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked and lived for over 50 years.  In 1966, Darwin and Jane became the proud parents of Jeffrey Baker.  Jane passed in 2002 after battling cancer.  While volunteering with Habitat, Darwin and Sunny met, and were married in 2008.  In 2016, they moved to The Villages, Florida.

Darwin was a volunteer for The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Huntsville Hospital, EAA and Habitat for Humanity. He is a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Sunny Baker; son, Jeffrey Baker; stepson, Ray Knott; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  He is also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; and daughter, Faron Campbell.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 30th, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.  There will be a private burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity.
