Danny R. Short, 79, passed away on March 22, 2026, after a brief illness. He left behind a life built on quiet dedication, deep love, and a good song turned up loud.
Born in Arab, Alabama, to Joe Rayburn Short and Mary Nell Hawk, Danny was a small-town kid with a sharp mind and a steady compass. He attended Arab High School before earning his master’s degree in psychology from Alabama A&M University. He answered his country’s call and served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Milton, Florida. After his honorable discharge, Danny returned home to Arab, where he would spend decades shaping young lives as an educator with Huntsville City Schools before retiring.
Never one to sit still for long, Danny co-owned Short Stop Printing alongside his wife, Renee—building a business rooted in hard work, good people, and the kind of loyalty that made employees feel like family.
Danny was an avid music lover, and above all else, he loved the blues. The kind of music that tells the truth. If you knew Danny, you understood why that resonated with him—he was honest, soulful, and never one to put on airs.
Danny was predeceased by his daughter, Stacie Rae Short, and his brother, Thomas Duff Short.
He is survived by his wife and partner in all things, Renee Shaw; his son, Luke Short (Amanda); grandchildren Elizabeth Rae Short (Birdie) and Calvin James Short; and several beloved nephews and nieces. He is also remembered by the many people whose lives he touched through his years of teaching, his work at the shop, and his generous, understated way of showing up for the people around him.
A Celebration of Life will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Union Grove Baptist Cemetery in Arab, AL.
