Daniel Philip “Dan” Spencer
May 29, 1947 – July 10, 2025
Daniel Philip “Dan” Spencer, 78, of Arab, Alabama, passed away on July 10, 2025.
Born on May 29, 1947 in Bluefield West Virginia, Dan and his parents relocated to Alabama during the Space Race that followed World War II. Dan’s father, Bill Greever, worked along side the likes of Werner Von Braun as an engineer and was instrumental in the development of the Saturn V rocket.

Later, Dan served in the U.S. Army as part of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. After his service, he spent much of his career as a commercial truck driver, logging countless miles across the country.

Dan was known for his calm, steady presence and his sharp sense of humor. He had a natural ability to read a room and always seemed to know the right time for a well-placed joke. He had a strong appreciation for Alabama football, classic cars, NASCAR, drag racing, and playing guitar—interests that stayed with him throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Wittenhagen, mother Elizabeth Greever, father Bill Greever, sister Kitty Durham and brother David Spencer.

He is survived by his son Philip Spencer; step-daughter Tammy Chapman; younger brother Billy Greever; and grandchildren Erath, Myra, and Paloma Spencer, as well as his step-grandchildren Christopher Chapman, Tina-Hardin and 7 step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on August 2, 2025, 2 PM at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel in Arab, Alabama. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel entrusted with arrangements.
