Dan graduated from Cherokee Vocational High School, attended Athens College and graduated from University of North Alabama (Florence State). Following graduation in 1959, he entered the United States Army Reserves and retired in 1985 as Master Sergeant. These years were most rewarding to him and he always said “a great bunch of good men”

Dan loved sports and played baseball and basketball at Athens College and basketball at Florence State. He was an avid fan of The University of Alabama football and basketball programs. He went to football games for over 50 years (Roll Tide Roll). For many years he managed his own independent basketball teams in the Florence area as well as playing on them, these men he never forgot.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patty McCravy Helmick Boling and her sons, Gary, Kim and Glenn Helmick; his brother, Reverend Ragan W. Boling, of Birmingham, Ala.; two nephews, Greg and Tim Boling, of Birmingham; niece, Cindy Romans (Pat), of Fla.; seven very close cousins.
