Curtis “Curt” Whitley age 69 of Sumiton, passed away Monday September 25, 2017 at his residence.
A funeral memorial service will be held on Thursday September 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel. Interment of cremains will follow in New Horizon Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm at the funeral home.
Curt was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served nine years and two tours in Vietnam. He worked with a missing children’s program in Florida, where he won the National Highway Hero of the Year Award in 1985. Curt loved cars and drove for NASCAR from 1972-1979. For 40 years Curt was a spokesman for veterans, assisting them with their benefit eligibility.
Curt was preceded in death by his mother, Helon Abbott; father, Virgil Whitley; grandmother, Mary Abbott and grandfather, Loil Abbott.
He is survived by the love of his life, Sonia; along with the family they shared, Danny, Kathy, Brittany, Connor and Haley; two daughters, Sherilyn Whatley (Zack) and Rebecca Maas (Tim); two sisters, LaVirgie Franklin (Hugh) and Sandra Baker (Richard); three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
