Courtney Howard Whitten, 34 of Florence, AL passed away Monday, October 14, 2013. He was a native of Lauderdale County, a member of Florence First Assembly of God and a USMC veteran. Courtney served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was awarded the Marine Corp Accomadation Medal for leadership in his company.
Courtney attended Wilson High School where he played on the football team. He also attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville where he studied Mechanical and Aerospace engineering. While attending UAH he received “Who’s Who Among Student in Universities and Colleges”. He was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega and participated in many extra curriculum activities.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 18, 2013 from 6-9 p.m. at Florence First Assembly of God and on Saturday, October 19 from 12:30-2:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Saturday October 19, 2013 at the church at2:00 p.m. with Bro. Greg Woodall officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery with military honors.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather J. Howard Whitten; great grandparents, Lina Montgomery and Anderson Montgomery and aunt Patsy Gray.
Survivors include his parents, Kenneth Howard Whitten and Brenda Clanton Whitten; brothers, Barry Whitten (Wendy), Rodney Whitten (Traci), and special nephew raised in the home as a little brother, Ryan Davis; sisters, Kimberly Davis (Rocky) and Tiffany Darby (Jack); grandparents; Ruth Whitten and Elzo and Doyce Clanton; his beloved pet and best friend, Delbert Whitten; former wife, Andrea Whitten; 13 nieces and nephews, 1 great niece and 1 great nephew and extended family members.
Pallbearers will be Rocky Davis, Ryan Davis, Evan Eddy, Kaleb Whitten, Blake Gallien and Bradley Elliot. Britton Gallien will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Courtney was a loving son, husband, uncle, and friend to anyone he met and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His love for God was shown through his compassion for others and many charities he was involved with.
