ATHENS-On July 24, 2025, Deputies Preston Green and Hunter Broadway with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office apprehended a wanted fugitive and convicted sex offender out of New York following a roadside encounter on Ripley Road in Athens.
Deputies observed a man riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the roadway in the 15000 block of Ripley Road. When stopped, the individual refused to provide identification and gave a false name. A search of the provided identity yielded no results. As deputies attempted to determine the man’s true identity further, he fled on foot. Deputies Green and Broadway pursued and were able to catch him. A physical altercation ensued, and the subject was taken into custody after being tased.
Investigators identified the suspect as Jairo Chavez, 38, of Elmira, New York, a convicted sex offender who was previously
convicted of raping a juvenile. Chavez is wanted in New York for violating his parole conditions.

* Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement
* Obstructing Justice Using a False Identity
* Resisting Arrest
* Failure to Register as a Sex Offender (SORNA Violation)
During the investigation, Chavez stated he is a citizen of Mexico and was born in Nuevo Laredo. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been contacted, and an immigration detainer has been placed on him.
