Connie D. Jones passed away at her home in Guntersville on March 29, 2025, at the
age of 77, surrounded by her loved ones. Connie was born on October 6, 1947, in
Albertville, Alabama. She grew up on a rural farm, helping to raise her brothers and
sisters when her mother suffered an aneurysm while she was still in high school. After
graduation from Albertville High School in 1966, Connie travelled to the Netherlands,
where she stayed with her Aunt Bobbie Curry in Utrecht for the summer. Upon her
return, Connie attended Northeast Community College and then completed her
Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Auburn University, all within three years. During this
time, she met and married her husband, Richard Jones. Later, Connie would become
the first woman in her family to earn a Master’s Degree, which she earned from the
University of Alabama while rearing three young children.
Connie and Richard went on to have an incredible marriage for 57 years, weathering
unimaginable challenges together. As a schoolteacher for 28 years, primarily for 2 nd
graders in the Albertville city school system, she earned the Teacher of the Year Award
twice. She taught over 800 children to read during her tenure. Upon her retirement,
the mayor of Albertville presented her with the key to the city.
In 1988, Connie’s oldest child,16-year-old son Eric, was paralyzed from the chest down
in a car accident. She championed him as he pursued and achieved his dreams
nonetheless, and cried tears of joy as he graduated with honors from the University of
Alabama. She later worked alongside him in his financial advisory practice in
Guntersville for years, travelling all over the world with him on business trips. All four of
her children went on to earn college degrees.
Known for her kindness and generosity, Connie was deeply admired by all who knew
her. She devoted her life to others, becoming a cherished figure in both her family and
community. An impeccable homemaker, Connie made all feel welcome in her home.
Her Fourth of July feasts at their lakeside home were always the highlight of her year,
embracing all who attended. Her passion was her family, and she doted on her
grandchildren, Jack, Evan, Vince, Conner, Gwen, Logan, and Liam.
Connie’s passing leaves a deep void, but her family takes comfort in knowing she is at
peace. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and W.D. Duckett, and her
brothers, Gary and Roger Duckett. She is survived by her husband, Richard Jones,
children Eric Jones (Sylvia), Amanda Jones Clark (Kevin), Rachel Jones Dunkerley
(Brad), and Ryan Jones (Jessica), seven grandchildren, sisters Jonnie Young and Pat
Brown, Aunt Janie Gordon, Aunt Ethaleen Benefield, best friend Deborah Jarvis, many
cousins, nieces, and nephews, and countless friends.
The funeral will be held at Guntersville United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April
2 ND, at 2:00 pm. Public visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm. Both will be held at the
Guntersville First Methodist Church. The pallbearers will be Eli and Aidan
Pierce, Ray Duncan, Jack Dunkerley, Evan Jones, and Conner Clark.
