TENNESSEE VALLEY-A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for north Alabama and southern middle Tennessee from 12 am (Midnight tonight) to 12 pm (Noon) on Monday. Apparent temperatures (Wind Chills) of -5° to 5° are forecast during this time.
Below there are listings for Warming Centers In The North Alabama Area:
Colbert County
The Michael Community Center on 1001 E. 17th Street will be open starting at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19. Food and supplies are not guaranteed and no pets or smoking is allowed.
Alabama EMA said the following centers will be open in Colbert County:
- The Cherokee Community Shelter 1211 2nd Street in Colbert County will open as a warming center
- Sheffield Recreation Center on 2901 E 19th Ave, Sheffield, AL 35660
- Leighton Community Shelter – 8856 Main Street, Leighton
- Littleville Community Shelter – 1448 Jackson Highway, Littleville
Alabama EMA also said the Leighton Storm Shelter will also open as a warming center until temperatures rise above freezing. Food and supplies are not guaranteed.
Cullman County
Trinity Pentecostal Church
307 Whaley Ave NE: Will open Monday and will remain available as long as needed during the cold temperatures
Fairview
Etha Baptist Church
8417 County Road 1545: Beginning Monday, will provide shelter during the cold night hours and will continue throughout the week
Dodge City Town Hall
130 Howard Circle: The basement of the town hall will be accessible throughout the cold temperatures
Donald Green Center
1625 Cleveland Ave. SW: They are preparing to open if deemed necessary throughout the week. Officials say they will keep those updates on the status of the center as needed
DeKalb County
According to the DeKalb County EMA Director, several organizations around the county have coordinated to open warming centers on an as-needed basis. Those who need assistance should call Marked for Life Ministries 24/7 hotline at 888-789-4673. They will direct the callers to the closest warming center and help with unmet needs.
Alabama EMA said in Fort Payne, the basement of the City Auditorium next to City Hall at 100 Alabama Ave NW will be open now until the weather event ends. Contact 888.789.4673 for more.
Lauderdale County
Home Free Haven has added days to their Emergency Nights. Check-in at the help center, located at 621 S. Court Street in Florence, is at 4:30 p.m. You can text 256-284-2487 for more information.
The Salvation Army of the Shoals will host overnight shelters and meals. Check-in is at 5 p.m. at 1601 Huntsville Road in Florence. You can call (256) 765-4432 for more information.
Southern Legacy Assembly will be open as a daytime warming center at 116 S. Royal Ave. It will be open for temps below freezing. Food and supplies will be available. Home Free Haven will pick up from Southern Legacy Assembly at 4:15 p.m. if you choose to shelter with HFH.
Alabama EMA said The Help Center at 621 S. Court Street in Florence will be open. The Cherokee Storm Shelter will open as a warming center starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1211 2nd Street. Food and supplies are not guaranteed and neither pets nor smoking is allowed.
Madison County
The following warming centers will be open:
- Community Warming Center – The Livin’ Room (2820 Governors Drive SW): Open Monday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. to Thursday, Jan. 23 at 9 a.m. Call Community Development at 256-427-5400 or email Rosie Veal-Eby, Church of the Nativity, at rvealeby@nativity-hsv.org.
- First Stop (206 Stokes St.): Open Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 256-533-3391.
- Downtown Rescue Mission (1400 Evangel Drive NW): Open 24/7. Call 256-536-2441.
- Salvation Army (305 Seminole Drive SW): Open Monday-Sunday, 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Call 256-536-9147.
Huntsville Transit will also offer free rides to and from the centers. Transit runs Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If Transit is unavailable, you can call the Huntsville Police Department at 256-722-7100.
Huntsville Police will also transport individuals to the warming centers outside of Huntsville Transit operating hours. To request a ride, please call HPD’s non-emergency phone number, 256-722-7100.

Morgan County
The Hands Across Decatur will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Lunch will be provided daily at 11:00 a.m. Blankets, warm coats, gloves, socks and hats will be available.
Hands Across Decatur is located at 1027 5th Avenue SE.
The Salvation Army of Decatur will open its gymnasium at 4:00 p.m. every day as an overnight shelter. Dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m. and people must be inside by 7:00 p.m. A light breakfast will be served at 7:00 a.m. and people must leave at 8:00 a.m.
