TUSCUMBIA-The Colbert County Sheriff’s Department is taking action to protect citizens from the spread of Covid. According to Colbert Sheriff Eric Balentine, he and his officers will be visiting senior centers throughout the County on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, to provide free items such as alcohol spray bottles, masks, and sanitizing wipes. Sheriff Department officers will also sanitize the interior of vehicles upon request. These actions come just as there has been an uptick in the numbers of those affected by the virus.
Sheriff Balentine announced that his officers will spend the day making stops at senior centers from one end of the County to the other, with the first stop being the East Colbert Senior Center at approximately 8:00 a.m., followed by Leighton, Littleville, and Cherokee. Balentine encourages residents to take advantage of this give away and vehicle sanitization to protect themselves and their loved ones from the spread of Covid.
Well over one million Americans have died from Covid-19, and there has been a 12.5 percent increase in deaths in recent weeks. As of September, there have been over six million hospitalizations, with those numbers rising as well. The Colbert County hospitalization is currently at medium level, and the Sheriff hopes to prevent a rise by providing these safety measures.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends limited exposure to those who have or may have been infected, getting tested, adequate ventilation, and other basic hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing. The CDC further recommends taking advantage of new booster shots as they are made available.
Contact Sheriff Balentine at the Colbert County Courthouse for more information about the senior center distribution schedule.
