ACRI commends Brock Black for his commitment to the construction industry
LEIGHTON– Go Build Alabama, an initiative of the Alabama Construction Recruitment Institute (ACRI), named Brock Black of Colbert County High School as Go Build Alabama’s Future Skilled Workers of America (F.S.W.A.) Student of the Month Award for December, 2015.
“Brock has the intellect and natural ability to be the valedictorian of his class,” said Colbert County High School Principal Melcha Satchel. “With is mind is made up, and his strong work ethic, I’m confident Brock will have a rewarding career in whichever field he chooses.”
Black is from Muscle Shoals and is a senior at Colbert County High School. His father is a welder.
“Seeing my dad work, and watching the sparks and flames always caught my attention as a little kid,” said Black. “When it comes to my plans for the future, I want to work with my hands and make an honest living doing it.”
The F.S.W.A. Student of the Month is an honor bestowed upon one high school junior or senior by the Alabama Construction Recruitment Institute every month during the school year. It was created to encourage students to consider pursuing careers in the construction industry, a field that offers a wide variety of rewarding career paths. Each student selected for the award becomes eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship to a higher education training center in Alabama. Scholarship are made possible thanks to proceeds from the Big Dog Poker Run, an annual benefit motorcycle ride organized by CraneWorks and Garrison Steel.
Teachers, principals and other school personnel are encouraged to nominate students for the Go Build Alabama Future Skilled Workers of America Award. To be eligible, students must be high school juniors or seniors with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in construction. They must also be enrolled in, or have been enrolled in, technical courses related to the skilled trades, or have plans to continue their education in the construction industry after graduating high school. About Go Build Alabama 
ACRI launched the Go Build campaign in August of 2010 in effort to prepare for the anticipated shortage as older tradesmen leave the workforce. One third of all skilled tradesmen in the construction industry are over the age of 50. With their retirement on the horizon, training programs are not producing enough young workers to replace those exiting the industry. The Go Build campaign aims to recruit the next generation of skilled construction trade workers.
