Obituary of Clovis B. Malmede Jr. Clovis B. Malmede, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2025. Clovis was born to Clovis, Sr. and Hazel Malmede on May 10, 1937 in Birmingham, Alabama. He and his younger sister, Bernice grew up in the south living in Birmingham, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Savannah and Port Wentworth, Georgia.

Clovis was always interested in airplanes and flying and in 1960 he graduated from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa earning a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. Shortly thereafter he served in the Unites States Army National Guard. In 1961, Clovis married his sweetheart, Charlotte Spurrier and they were blessed to add three children to their family over the next few years. Clovis enjoyed a long career with NASA. During his 45 year tenure, he worked on the Apollo, International Space Station and the Shuttle programs.

Clovis was a faithful member of Whitesburg Baptist Church since 1976. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Discipleship leader, and participated on numerous short-term mission teams. One of his favorite projects was volunteering as a member of Whitesburg Christian Academy’s start-up committee. He was very interested in creating a school that honored the Lord and offered a great education.

Clovis served with The Gideons International for fifty years. Many students, nurses, and soldiers were handed a copy of The Gideon New Testament by Clovis over the decades. You could also find him living out his faith at the local jail, where he visited regularly to share with inmates the hope of Christ. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren launching rockets, fishing, going to the Space and Rocket center and the library. He had a lifetime love for learning and loved to share it with his children and grandchildren.

Clovis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Malmede; his children, Susan (Mark) Jackson, Charles (Anastasia) Malmede, and Beth (Steve) Swann; his grandchildren Jonathan (Sydney King) Jackson, Wesley (Andi) Jackson, Taylor (Sabrina Lynn) Jackson, Mary Beth (Jacob) Hill, Scott Malmede, Sam Malmede, Robin Malmede, Dasha Baeva, Anna Swann, Caroline (Zach) Mumma, and Eli Swann; his great-grandchildren Aelynn Jackson, Oliver Jackson, Amelia Jackson, Noah Hill, Juliette Jackson, Edith Hill and Jett Jackson.

Clovis was preceded in death by his father, Clovis B. Malmede, Sr., his mother, Hazel Hamrick Malmede, his sister, Bernice Malmede Holland, and great-grandchildren, Archer Noel Hill, Silas Stanley Hill, and Dashel Franklin Hill.

Visitation will be Monday, January 6, from 10:00 – 11:00 am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am at the Whitesburg Baptist Church Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Whitesburg Missions or The Gideons International.
