Clifford "Cliff" Fredrick Carlisle IIIClifford Fredrick Carlisle, III, 69 of Birmingham, AL, formerly of Monticello, NY, passed away on August 9, 2020 after a 7 year battle with ALS. He graduated from Monticello High School, NY; Orange County Community College, NY, Jefferson State Community College, AL; and The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire academy, Emmitsburg, MD. He retired as Deputy Chief of the Mountain Brook Fire Department after serving with Center Point Fire District, Bluff Park Fire District and Corner Volunteer Fire Department. He was also an active member of the National Disaster Medical Service (DMAT) and helped provide medical assistance after several hurricanes and at Ground Zero after the World Trade Center was attacked. Cliff taught Emergency Medical courses at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (RTI), Bevill State Community College-Sumiton, and at Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Service System (BREMSS), He was a successful grant writer and was able to secure funds to provide equipment for volunteer and professional fire departments. During his career he was a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), Alabama Association of Fire Investigators (AAFI), Central Alabama Fire Chiefs Association (CAFCA), and International Association of Firefighters (IAFF). His loves included camping, canoeing, tinkering with old cars, model railroading and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clifford and Alice Carlisle. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Rindt Carlisle; son, Rusty Spruell, his wife Bretta, and their children Noah and Savannah; daughter, Christy Guthrie, her husband Todd, and their children Emma and Megan; his sister, Cindy Ream, her husband Tom, and their daughter Siri.
There will be a private graveside service at a later date in Sheffield, AL. Memorial gifts may be made to a local fire department or animal shelter.
