Claudie Eugene (Gene) McDonald, 70, of Carbon Hill (Leonards Chapel Community) passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, December 31, 2017, after battling a long term illness.

SP5 McDonald served in the Army from 1967-1970.  He fought in the Vietnam War during the Tet Offensive.  He was a retired Coal Miner.

Gene was devoted to his family and his brothers and sisters in Christ.  He served as an Elder at West Walker Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his father, Claude McDonald and his mother, Lela Smith McDonald.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Mason McDonald; son Jamie McDonald (Kristee) of Carbon Hill; daughter April McDonald Lazenby (Mark) of Petal, MS; grandson Jacob Lazenby and granddaughter Madi Shae Lazenby.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January  3, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be at West Walker Church of Christ on Thursday, January 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., he will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  Gene will be laid to rest at the family cemetery at New Liberty Church in Fayette County.  Ben Wright and Neil Myers will officiate.
