Claude B. Honeycutt, 95, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Born in Gadsden, he graduated from Emma Sansom High School. He then entered the Army Air Corp as a fighter pilot where he flew the P-47 Thunderbolt. He was a member of the 227th Fighter Squadron in the 34th Fighter group off of Ayashimi, Okinawa, Japan.
Following his service as a combat veteran in WWII, he graduated from the University of Alabama, and returned to Gadsden to marry Mary Mayo. They moved to Bainbridge, GA, where he spent the next 10 years with Southern Airways as an instructor for fighter pilots. Following this, they moved to Huntsville where he opened a CPA practice, and retired after 26 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Honeycutt. Survivors include sons, Burton Honeycutt (Elizabeth) and Vaughn Honeycutt; and granddaughters, Mary Katherine Honeycutt (Travis Ball), Kelsey Honeycutt, Katie Mattox, and Cheyanne Mattox.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 29 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral will follow in the chapel with the Rev. Emerson Lyle officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whitesburg Baptist Church, Hospice of North Alabama, or a favorite charity.
