FLORENCE-The City of Florence Solid Waste, Street, & Recycling Department has taken a major step toward more sustainable waste management with the purchase of a pre-owned air curtain burner from the City of Gadsden.
The equipment, manufactured by Air Burners, is designed to process clean green brush and wood waste, significantly reducing the amount of material sent to the landfill.
Air curtain burner technology uses a high-velocity curtain of air to improve combustion efficiency, allowing municipalities to safely and effectively dispose of vegetative debris while containing and recirculating smoke, so materials burn more completely and produce significantly reduced visible smoke.
According to industry data, this technology can reduce waste volume by 95–98%, leaving only a small amount of ash. “This is a game changer for how we manage brush and wood waste in Florence,” said David Koonce, Manager of Solid Waste, Street, and Recycling. “Instead of burying valuable organic material in the landfill, we can now dramatically reduce volume on site. The process will not only extend the life of our landfill but also improve operational efficiency and reduce long-term costs for our community.”
The unit will process materials such as tree limbs, storm debris, and other clean wood waste collected through routine operations and special cleanup efforts. Training on the new equipment will begin next Tuesday, with full implementation expected shortly thereafter.
