At age 83, Charles Vaughan Hood passed away at North Mississippi Medical Center following a recent illness. His close friends and family will remember him as “Hood Daddy.” He was a retired farmer and bulldozer operator in the Lee County area. His other activities were: wood working, building furniture, and collecting. He also enjoyed reading and genealogy. He volunteered with Tupelo Hog Roasters and cleanup of Shannon Cemetery.
He accepted Christ as his Savior in 1947 and was baptized. He was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church in Shannon. At one time he was very active on the grounds committee remodeling of the original sanctuary and helped build the covered walkway.
Vaughan was born the son of Leon L. Hood Sr. and Martha Louise Vaughan Hood. He graduated from Shannon High School in 1952. He was a member of Beta Club, Future Farmers of America, and 4-H Club. He lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was voted Most Popular Boy and received the Balfour Award. He excelled in agriculture and work shop classes. He won blue ribbons for exhibiting his calves at the Memphis Dairy Show and the Mississippi/Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo. In 1950 -1951 he was awarded the Mississippi Junior Leadership Award.
Following high school graduation, he joined the Mississippi National Guard, HOW BTRY 1st RS 108th AC. He served eight years until he was involved in a farming accident in 1961. Upon leaving the National Guard he became a member of the American Legion.
Vaughan married Joan Kinard in 1959 and raised 4 daughters in their 59 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife Joan Hood; his daughters: Julie Hood Armstrong and husband Jerry, Sandy Hood Renslow, and Martha Hood; Grandchildren: Jessica Armstrong, Katherine Armstrong, Melanie Armstrong Moore and husband Klint, Tyler Renslow, and Kaley Renslow; Great grandchild: Mackenzie Lynn Moore; his niece: Stephanie German and husband Jerry; his Nephew: Leon Lawrence Hood III “Trey”; and sister in law: Dorothy Kinard.
He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandparents: Oscar and Mattie Lou Seale Vaughan; Paternal Grandparents: John Calvin Hood and Irene Barbee Hood; parents: Leon and Louise Hood; his brother: Leon Hood Jr.; and daughter: Jennifer Susan Hood.
Visitation will be held: Tuesday, September 4, 4:00-6:00 pm at Holland Funeral Directors, 5281 Cliff Gookin Blvd, Tupelo, MS 38801. Funeral services will be held: Wednesday, September 5, 10:30am, followed by a graveside service at Shannon Cemetery.
