Charles Reed Wells, Sr.

Charles Reed Wells, Sr., left this life for his heavenly home on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the age of 89.  He was a resident of Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home at the time of his death.

His is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marie Perkins Wells;  Daughters: Vickie Wells and Brenda Maples-Sterry (Terry);  Sons: Charles R. Wells Jr (Alisa) and Danny Maples (Candie);  Brother: Robert Wells (Catherine);  Sister: Nancy Hofues;  Sister-in-Law, Lovell Tate Wells;   Grandchildren:  Cassie Wells, Julie Todd (Jordan), Russell Knight, Ellen Sterry, Kasi McDermott, Jason Maples (Laura), Zachary Maples (Whitney), and great-grandson, Felix Maples.  He is preceded in death by his parents, William Reese and Roberta Anderson Wells;  Brothers: Perry, Arthur, Joe, David, and sister, Telette Graves.

“Charlie” served his country in both in the Army and Navy.  After retiring from the Navy, he worked as safety officer from Rohm and Haas Company on Redstone Arsenal.  Later in his career, he owned a variety store, served as bailiff for Madison County, and worked at Reid’s Hardware in Huntsville.

He was an avid researcher, publishing several civil war books and extensive histories of the Wells, Perkins, and Maples families.  For several years, he led a campaign to locate and mark the grave of every Confederate soldier buried in Madison County, resulting the in the placement of over 700 Confederate markers.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8pm at Hazel Green Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11am at the funeral home with Elder Coy Brothers and Elder K.L. Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Memorial Gardens.
