Charles R. “Charlie” Christopher age 79 of Athens, Alabama passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at North Alabama Specialty Hospital, Athens, Alabama. Mr. Christopher was born May 13, 1937 in Limestone County, Alabama to Charles E. and Marie Lewis Christopher.

Services will be Friday, November 4, 2016 4:30 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Guy McDaniel officiating. Visitation will be Friday, from 12:00 p.m. until 4:15 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery

Mr. Christopher was involved with the Athens community for many years. He served as President of Athens Civitan Club, President of Athens Economic Development Association, President of State ALLC, Chairman of Tennessee Valley Association of Counties, Chairman of Democratic Committee, and President of TARCOG. He is a past member of the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce Board and was the recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award in 1980.

In August 2005, Christopher retired from Economy Cleaners, a laundry and dry-cleaning business he owned and operated for 23 years. Prior to owning Economy Cleaners he was Chairman of the Limestone County Commission from 1974-1982. He was employed with Pet Dairy Company for 14 years.

Christopher was an active member of The O’Neal Church of Christ and served as an elder.

Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marie Christopher; one sister, Ann Paulk.

Survived by his wife, Betty Davis Christopher; two sons, Phillip and Brad Christopher; one daughter, Penny Roberts (John) all of Athens; four grandchildren, Caleb, Colter, Caitlin and Ella; one sister, Linda Butler of Athens; numerous family members and host of friends.

Pallbearers will be John Roberts, Caleb Christopher, Colter Christopher, Jamie Butler, Matt Taylor and Hunter Appleton. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Chandra Koneru, Dr. Randy Harrison, Charles Durham, Tommie Smith, Glen Pressnell, Winston Jackson and Kenneth Lewter.
