Mr. Charles Leon Cook, age 83, of Vernon, AL, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at his residence.

Mr. Cook was born August 16, 1939, in Vernon, AL, to the late L.C. and Mary Ludean Cribbs Cook.  He graduated from Lamar County High School in 1958 then later earned his PharmD and RPh degrees in pharmacy from Samford University.  Mr. Cook owned operated Cook’s Pharmacy from 1965-1990, then co-owned Hospital Pharmacy from 1993-2010.  He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Vernon where he enjoyed singing.  He was also the first person to eat a Jack’s hamburger at their first restaurant in Birmingham.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his daughter, Carrie Denise Cook, and his sister, Janette Berman.

Mr. Cook belonged to numerous organizations in town.  He was a member of the Lions Club, and served on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Vernon, the hospital board, and the Board of Directors for the West Alabama Hospice.  He was also elected to the Lamar County Board of Education and served two terms.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 24, at 3:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Vernon, with Bro. Brandon Phillips and Bro. Clyde Steven officiating.  Burial will follow at Lamar Memory Gardens.  Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 at the church prior to the service.

Active pallbearers will be Jack Moody, Tony Taylor, Jonathan Beasley, James Lacy, Phillip Glasgow, and Ed Gosa.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Lamar County High School Class of 1958, Wayne Baines, Terrell Guthrie, Terry Gosa, and Glen Taylor.

Survivors include his son, Christopher Charles Cook, of Vernon, AL; two sisters, Carol Clark of Water Valley, MS and Suzanne Murphy of Dayton, OH; and a host of cousins and his extended family.  The family would like to say a special thank you to his special friend, Jackie Boozer of Pensacola, FL, for her loving care.
