Charles Lee Baker – Obituary

Charles Lee Baker, 69, of Athens, Georgia, passed away Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014.

Chuck, as he was known to family and friends, was born on June 20, 1945, and grew up in Sheffield, Alabama. He was the son of the late Harry and Margaret DeVogel Baker and was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Scheurman.

Following high school, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point New York, graduated in 1967, and was commissioned as an officer in the Army where he served in the 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division in Vietnam, and with the Army Security Agency in Germany. After eight years in the military he went to work with Merrill Lynch in Athens, Georgia as a financial advisor for 25 years. After retiring in 2000, he gradually pursued his passions of family, pets, and life outdoors, especially boating and fishing.

In addition to his beloved wife, Marilyn, he is survived by sons, Danny Baker, of Santa Clare, California, and Gavin Baker, of New York City, New York; stepsons, Andy Nunez, of Dacula, Georgia, and Ryan Nunez, of Suwanee, Georgia; brothers, Jim Baker, of Federal Way, Washington, and Bob Baker, of Athens, Alabama; sister, Dee Rose, of Germantown, Tennessee; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Athens Humane Society, 1781 Mars Hill Rd., Watkinsville, GA 30677.
