Master Gunnery Sergeant Charles Jones, 91, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, passed away September 29, 2024.
The adopted son of Chester and Margaret Scott Jones, Charles was born in 1933 and grew up in Medicine Lodge, KS. He received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1973, and was honorably discharged after more than 28 years of service.
After two years in the United States Army, at the age of twenty, Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of MGySgt. While enlisted in the U.S. Army, Charles spent time in Germany at the end of the Korean War; as a U.S. Marine he served during the Vietnam War and was awarded multiple medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons throughout his career.
As a former Marine, Charles worked as an educational specialist, with Colsa and Teledyne Brown Engineering, teaching in Egypt. During which he and Linda took advantage of the opportunity to become world travelers. When he wasn’t traveling, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, woodworking and working in the garden.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Linda Jones; brothers, Chester “Jerry” Jones, Jr., Lawrence “Dick” Jones; sister Ruth Meserve; and in-laws, Wendell and Duane Slocum, Beverly and Don Lowry, and Donald Jenkins. He is survived by daughters, Nancy Jones and Darla (William) Bragg; grandsons, Michael Bragg, Jason Bragg and his partner Lottie Sides; and in-laws Melvin Slocum, Mary Link, and Peggy Jenkins.
A Visitation will be held at Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Graveside Service will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
