Funeral service for Charles John Kara, age 62, of Decatur, will be Saturday, October 28, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Darryl Goldman officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 27, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Kara, who died Friday, October 20, 2017, at Huntsville Hospital, was born December 31, 1954, in Kajokeji, South Sudan to John Sokiri and Cecilia Kiden Sokiri. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Kara obtained his Master’s Degree from Yale University. He was a published author, wildlife enthusiast, environmental conservationist, an avid music fan, and a professor at Calhoun Community College and Northwest Florida University. He especially enjoyed his tenure in environmental science with the USDA at Eglin AFB.
He is survived by his loving wife, Roda Kuyang Kara of Decatur; five children, Richard Kara, Gaiting Kara, Fokker Kara, Rina Kara, and Amanda Kara, all of Decatur; one brother, Sebit Sokiri of South Africa; one sister, Sikiya Sokiri of Uganda; two grandchildren, Jada Kara and Nailah Kara; and one cousin, Kiri Wani of Decatur.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
