charles Charles Gordon Newman, Sr., age 81, of Florence, passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2015. Visitation will be today, Nov. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home, of Florence. The service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor David McKelvey officiating. Graveside service will be Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery in Gadsden, with Brother Gary Lawson officiating.
Charles was a member of First Baptist Killen and was retired with I.M.C. as a regional sales manager and was a U.S. Army veteran as a Specialist Second Class. He was a graduate of Auburn University and was a devoted husband, dad, papa and was a dedicated Christian who taught Sunday school and loved traveling to the Holy Land.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Horace and Inez Newman.
Survivors are his wife, Willene Lay Newman; children, C. Gordon Newman Jr. (Cynthia) and David W. Newman (Sora); stepchildren, William “Billy” Payne, Tracy Payne Shortnacy (Mark) and Marjorie Payne Stetson (David); brother, Horace Newman (Pam); grandchildren, Megan, Amber, Karina and Angela; great-grandson, Daniel; stepgrandchildren, Blake, Bobby, Carli, Tommy; and several nieces and nephews.
