Charles F. Smith, Jr. – Obituary

Charles F. Smith, Jr., 88, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday at home surrounded by loved ones after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and Charot-Marie Tooth (CMT) Disease.  Mr. Smith was born in Memphis, TN to the late Dr. Charles F. and Ivy Smith, Sr.  He went on to graduate from the University of Memphis with a BS Degree.  Charles continued his education and graduated with a degree in Chemistry from the University of Texas, where he was a Pi Kapp Alpha.  Charles retired in 1985 after a long distinguished career with NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center as a Chemist/Materials Analyst.  He received numerous accolades for his work and had one of his experiments fly aboard the first operational flight of the Space Shuttle.

Charles was a longtime member of Lakewood Methodist Church.  He was a Shriner and 32° Mason.  He was a member of The American Chemical Society and a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (HAM, W4UVM).

Charles was an avid learner and self-taught in many areas: computers, leather working, commercial building, and photography to name a few.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Lillian Marlene Smith; son, Charles ‘Chuck’ F. Smith III (Rhonda); daughters, Sandy Smith McDonald (Jim), and Susan Smith McConnell (Chris); and grandson, James Parker McDonald.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Steve Lacey officiating.  Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
