Charles Edwin Shaver, Jr., husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, loyal friend and wise counselor to all, lover of family, music, fishing, card playing, sports and his community, passed away Monday.
Born and reared in Huntsville, he was the son of Charles Edwin Shaver, Sr. and Sarah Moorman Shaver. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and Cumberland School of Law, and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Shaver was a partner in Lanier, Ford, Shaver and Payne Law Firm.
He was an active community member his entire life. He was a member of the Madison County, Alabama and American Bar Association. He served as deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school, served as a youth group leader, and as President of the Men of the Church. In the community, he served as President of the Acme Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Harris Home for Children and as their chairman. Mr. Shaver also served on the Board of Directors for the Mental Health Association, Central City Association Board, Constitution Hall Park Board of Directors, Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors, and Child Care Management Agency Board. He helped with fundraising for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the University of Alabama. He was also a member of the Huntsville Kiwanis Club, Elks Club, the Historic Huntsville Foundation, and served on the Huntsville Ice Plex Board.
One of his most enjoyable services to his community was as a member of the Huntsville Amateur Hockey Association Board of Directors. He was a house league director for two years, coached house league teams for four years, and managed the travel team for two years. He served on the committee of UAH Hockey from its inception, was a program chairman for UAH games where he was in charge of minor officials for four years, and helped with summer hockey schools and clinics for boys.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Kate Noble “Katie” Walker Shaver; daughter, Alice Holloway “Holly” Shaver Hall (Bradford); grandchildren, Kate Noble Wheeler Hall, Sarah Whelden Hall, and Bradford Doughty Hall; brother, John Moorman Shaver, Sr. (Sue); sister, Susie Dement Shaver Harper (Tommy); sister-in-law, Mary Alice Naylor; nieces and nephews, Will, Kate Noble, Sarah Elizabeth, Jane Walker, Ginny, Margaret, John; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Charles Edwin Shaver, III.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Maple Hill Cemetery.
