Funeral service for Charles Bee Martin, age 81, of Decatur, will be Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 1:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron McKay officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Decatur City Cemetery.
Mr. Martin, who died Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, was born July 12, 1931, in Curry, to Claude J. Martin (police lieutenant) and Annie Jones Martin (school teacher). He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, Thomas Bee Martin and Treva Jo Nell Minor, and one brother, William “Bill” Martin (Barbara Gibson Martin).
Charles began his 40-year political career in 1968 as a Decatur City Councilman. He was active in bringing Little League Baseball to Decatur and worked on the Point Mallard development. He served Alabama in the House of Representatives, Alabama Senate, and Public Service Commission. He was a strong force in developing the Children’s Trust Fund for Alabama. Charles was retired from Monsanto; he was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by two sons, Charles Lee Martin (Darlene), and Joe Bearl “Buddy” Martin, both of Decatur; two daughters, Pat Duncan of Birmingham, and Scarlett Guyse Spitzer (Perry) of Decatur; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Martin, Nigel Kelly, Buddy Richardson, Dick Wilder, Ron Seibert, and Paul Martin.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial donations to Hospice of the Valley.
