“SYNOPSIS OF OFFENSE & ARREST: Elder abuse and neglect – Second degree
On the morning of March 14th, 2014 Officers with the Decatur Police Department’s Warrant Unit went to 909 5th Avenue SE. Officers were attempting to check the welfare of 87 year old James Corum as well as serve a misdemeanor warrant on another individual.
Officers entered the residence and located Corum in a bedroom. Corum was in serious need of medical attention so units called for medical personnel to respond to the scene. Decatur Fire and Rescue as well as First Response Ambulance arrived on scene a few minutes later and transported Corum to Decatur Morgan Hospital for treatment.
Officers also made contact with Gregory Lynn Walden, Corum’s caretaker at the residence. Due to Courm’s medical condition as well as the conditions inside the residence Detective Burleson with the Violent Crimes Unit was called to the scene to investigate.
At the conclusion of the investigation Gregory Walden was charged with Elderly Abuse and Neglect in the 2nd Degree. Detective Burleson met with Morgan County Circuit Judge Jennifer Howell who set Walden’s bond at $100,000.00. Walden was booked into the Decatur City Jail and later transferred to the Morgan County Jail in lieu of bond.
