Carrol Dickinson – Obituary

Carrol Dickinson passed away on Sunday at the age of 83 at Millennium Health Care. She had been in declining health for several years. Carrol was born in Murray County, GA, to the late John Frank and Johnnie Patterson Bartenfield. She was reared in the Pleasant Grove Community of Whitfield County, GA. She graduated from Pleasant Grove High School at the age of 16 and was awarded a scholarship to West Georgia College for Women. Carrol moved to Huntsville in 1950. She worked for many years as a sales associate at A.L. Hipp and Mason Jewelers. She joined the Sperry Rand Corporation in the mid-1960s and was very proud of the support that she provided as a contractor to the Marshall Space Flight Center. She retired from Sperry in 1989. An accomplished musician, she enjoyed playing the piano and singing. As a member of First Baptist Church, Huntsville, she sang in the Hallelujah Choir and was active in senior activities as her health permitted.

Carrol was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 30 years, James Shannon Dickinson. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Kay Newby and Gregg Geis of Huntsville; grandson, Geoffrey Scott Newby Geis, of Los Angeles, California; sisters Frankie Elrod of Huntsville and Mary Skipper of Hixon, Tennessee; and nephews Michael (Susan) Elrod and Martin (Tina) Elrod of Huntsville; and James (Pam) Skipper of Hixon and their families.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Carrol’s memory to Alabama Baptist Children’s Home (ABCH), P.O. Box 361767, Birmingham, AL 35236-1767.

A Memorial Service will be held at noon on May 27th at the First Baptist Church, Huntsville. A reception will follow in the Church Parlor.
