Carolyn Schmitt, 82, of Belvidere passed away on March 20, 2024. She is preceded in death by her late husband, David Arlen Schmitt, and her parents Charles and Nina Maurer. She is survived by her two sons Richard Allen Cross (Dawn), and Stephen Michael Cross (Jennifer), and her two grandchildren Keira Anne Cross and Aaric Stephen Cross.
Carolyn was born in Belvidere, Tennessee, and attended Huntland School where she was active on the cheerleading team, the girls basketball team, and many club activities. She attended the University of Tennessee where she met her first husband, Allen Cross. After getting married in Winchester, Tennessee, the couple settled in Alabama, then moved to Kentucky, and eventually Maryland as Allen was a nuclear engineer on various TVA projects at the time. While in Maryland, Carolyn completed her Master of Business Administration at Mt. St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and worked for various firms, most notably General Electric as Payroll Administrator. After a divorce, she remarried in 1993. She spent the rest of her life with David Schmitt. First, in Maryland, where they both worked for General Electric, then moving back to Tennessee in Nashville, where she worked for Quorum Health as their Payroll Administrator.
Carolyn, and her husband David, spent many years traveling the world, visiting every continent. After her mother’s death, she moved back to her childhood residence and farm in Belvidere, Tennessee. Her final years were spent taking care of the stray cats in the area by catching, spaying, neutering, and keeping them healthy and under control, as well as keeping the family farm continuing operation. Her last year was spent with Betty Duncan at Betty’s Place in Huntland.
Visitation will be Monday, March 25 from 5pm to 8pm at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, with the Funeral on Tuesday, March 26 at 10am. She will be laid to rest with her family at Franklin Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
