Carol McLouth Smith, 87, of Montgomery, AL, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023 in Huntsville, AL. Carol was born on February 1, 1936 in Somers, MT to Harry and Flora McLouth. After high school graduation, she worked at Conrad National Bank where she met her future husband, Joseph Smith, while he was stationed at Kalispell Air Force Station, MT.
Carol and Joe lived all over the United States and in Europe while serving in the Air Force for 30 years. They eventually settled in Montgomery in the late 1970’s with their two children as he accepted his tenth and final assignment at Gunter Air Force Station. Family always came first with Carol. She was a wonderful stay-at-home mom and a supportive and active military spouse. Once their children were in high school, she managed a Hallmark Cards store and then worked at the Auburn University Montgomery library before retiring in 2001. Carol was remarkably athletic, enjoying skiing, water-skiing, golf and bowling. She was intelligent, witty, and sharper in her 80’s than most people half her age — she did the daily crossword puzzle in pen!
Carol is survived by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Kelly Smith Foshee (Mark) and their children, Morgan Foshee Barnes (Taylor) and Kendall Foshee Williams (Brady); and son, Doug Smith (Sharla) and their children, Rachael Smith, Austin Smith (Maisie), Adam Smith (Taegen) and Lily Smith Larson (Brock). She was especially delighted with her great-grandchildren Brodie Barnes and Kohen Smith.
The family conducted a private and intimate service and will spread her ashes in her home state of Montana.
