Mr.Carl Humphreys , age 82, passed away at his residence on Gladstone Ave. at 11:10 PM on January 24, 2006.
FUNERAL will be at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, Inc. with the Rev. Virl Murray presiding.
VISITATION will be from 10:00 AM until service time.
BURIAL in Garland Brook Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Mr. Humphreys owned a very well known and successful tree trimming service in Columbus for many years, was well known for the excellent work that he did, and was a retiree of Cummins Engine Company.
An army veteran of both Korea and the Philippines as a medic, he was finally able to receive, after over 50 years, the four medals he had earned for his service to his country in a ceremony at his residence several years ago. The medals were the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Star.
Mr. Humphreys was a member of Midway Assembly of God and loved Southern Gospel music. He also was a 32nd degree mason, a lifetime member of the VWF, and a member of the American Legion. Until he was physically unable to do so, he also served with the American Legion Color Guard.
He loved to read about Alaska and one of his greatest dreams was to someday visit there. He even went so far as to build a complete cab over camper from scratch in the backyard of his Gladstone Avenue residence over the period of several summers. Sadly, he lost his eyesight in later years and was unable to realize his dream of going there. Another love was his cars. He took great pride in keeping his Lincolns clean, many times washing them in the winter with it so cold out his wife would complain about the car door locks freezing. If you came to visit, more often than not upon leaving, you would find he had taken the time to wash your car.
Affectionately known as Papaw “Chico”, he will be dearly missed by all, especially his great-grandchildren, the “armpit” crew. He taught them many things, both funny and serious, life lessons they will remember all their lives.
Born in Red Bay, Alabama to Archie and Pearlie Humphreys on December 4, 1923, he was from a large family of cotton farmers. Mr. Humphreys had a total of 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
He married Mary Marie Parsons at Belmont, Mississippi, June 15, 1946.
He was preceded in death by both parents, all of his brothers, two of his sisters, and his wife of 59 years. His sister, Cecil still resides in Alabama.
Survivors include a son, Steven Doc (Kathy) Humphreys of Columbus, IN.; a daughter, Linda (Roy) Anderson of Hartsville, IN.; a sister, Cecil Fennil of Alabama; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.*
