Carl Edward Nida, Capt. USMC (Ret) 83 of Huntsville, AL passed away on September 27, 2018. Carl was born in West Hamlin, WV. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps when he was 17, served one tour of duty in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He was an outstanding Marine who received a temporary commission as an officer in 1965. He retired from the Marines as a Captain after 20 years of service to his country. Carl spent the majority of his military career in aviation where he served as an instructor, an enlisted maintenance chief and an avionics and weapons officer. He served in both rotary and fixed wing units during his tours in Vietnam. His highest enlisted rank was Master Sargent, and his highest officer’s rank was Captain. He was married to his loving wife of 57 years Eva in 1961, and they raised three children Russell, Jonathan and Theresa.
Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Mae Smith, father, Ellis Nida, stepfather Homer Harris, and sister, Rosetta. He is survived by his wife, Eva Ann Jones Nida; sons, Russell and his wife Karen, and Jonathan; daughter, Theresa Killough and her husband, Gray; granddaughter, Lauren; sister, Priscilla Smith, and many cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville at 10 a.m. Monday October 1st followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. A second visitation will be held at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home in Tellico Plains, TN at 11 a.m. on Saturday October 6th followed by a graveside service with military honors at Towee Falls Baptist Church cemetery at 12:30.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Towee Falls Baptist Church cemetery upkeep fund, or the charity of your choice.
