Carl Cowden Holder of Killen, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. He was surrounded by his family.

Carl was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. His family moved to North Alabama and settled in St. Florian where Carl grew up. He worked at TVA and Turtle Point. Carl enjoyed golf and songwriting.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents Walter Webb Holder and Nancy Sims Holder, his youngest son, Zachary Webb Holder, his brother, Walter Webb Holder, Jr. and sister Mildred Holder Kujath.

Carl is survived by his wife, Jeanne Balentine Holder, brother Robert Holder (Debbie), son, Toby Holder (Melissa), daughter, Amber Holder, daughter-in-law, Brenda Roland, grandsons, Will Thomas, Jackson Thomas, Colton Thomas, Webb Holder, and Zachary Holder.

Carl loved life. He loved the outdoors and had some of his best times with his wife and children playing disc golf, camping, and going to the beach.

Carl loved children. From his own children and grandchildren, to his nieces, nephews, and friends’ kids, Carl had a way of meeting children on their level. There wasn’t a baby he couldn’t get to sleep, and there wasn’t a child who didn’t leave laughing.

Carl loved music. He started playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager. The joy he found in music followed him throughout his life. He spent his adult life writing songs with fellow musicians, especially Mark Narmore, and Jimmy and Spooner Oldham.

Carl never met a stranger. He blessed others with his stories and songs. Those who were fortunate to know Carl were forever marked by his gentle, loving spirit.

Visitation for Carl will be Sunday, August 11, 2024, from 12:30-2:00 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park. An online guest book may be signed at greenviewmemorial.com.
