Camille Fleming Vaughan, a third generation Huntsvillian, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her husband and children, on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020 following a courageous five-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
She attended Wesleyan College, the University of Alabama and graduated Summa Cum Laude with the first on-campus graduation class at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
A three-time cancer survivor for 27 years, she made it her mission to reach out to those with cancer and offer encouragement, hope, and friendship. Countless people have been inspired by her strength, faith, and positivity in dealing with adversity.
Known for her warm, Southern hospitality and fabulous food, she loved hosting family and friends. She especially loved spending time at Lake Martin. She also enjoyed tennis, yoga, gardening, walking, fishing, and skiing. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church where she volunteered and taught Bible classes. She was often asked to speak in the community about her cancer journey and share her story of faith. She was a member of The Huntsville Garden Club, The Grace Club and she served on the Boards of Chi-Ho Foster Home and the Volunteer Center. She was proud to coordinate the Huntsville Children’s Miracle Network Telethon.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Herbert Walton Vaughan Jr, her two children and their spouses, Herbert Walton Vaughan III (Sarah), and Fleming Vaughan Sharp (Kevin); brothers Joe Aaron Fleming (Diane) and Louis Strong Fleming (Mary Jane); sister Della Fleming Park (Tom), and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. She was most proud of her beloved grandchildren, Jesse Alden Hiley Vaughan, Andrew Hiley Vaughan, Nathanael Walton Vaughan, Christopher Blue Schmitz, Bebe Camille Sharp and John Kevin Sharp Jr. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at Maple Hill Cemetery with Reverends Dr. Glenn Conner, Coy Hallmark and Dr. Bill Crosby officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation or the charity of your choice.
