ATHENS-It is Fiddlers Weekend, and there is plenty to cover in Athens.
Thousands will be here for the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention at Athens State for shade tree pickin’, contests, arts and crafts and more. Here is a link to info on schedule and history: https:// athensfiddlers.org/
As part of the weekend, Athens Arts League is hosting a Cakes and Quilts Show on Saturday. The cake contest judging will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Big Spring Memorial Park (behind Scout House). In case of heavy rain, the contest will be inside Scout House.
The “Patchwork Canvases Quilt Exhibit” will open that day at Scout House. The public can view quilts and see crochet demos from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Quilts on exhibit include the 1976 Bicentennial Quilt made by Julian Newman Elementary students (this quilt disappeared and was found at a Tennessee antique shop, where the buyer recognized an Athens man’s name in one of the quilt blocks); a quilt made from scraps saved from the Loretto, Tenn., Casket Factory; a quilt made from material accumulated during a trip to South Africa; and a Quilt of Valor made for a local veteran. One quilt on display was made in 1897 and is called a Crazy Quilt.
The Patchwork of Canvases Quilt Exhibit will also be open to the public on:
Monday, Oct. 5, and Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 3-5 p.m.
Wednesdays in October from noon to 3 p.m.
Thursdays in October from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
