LIMESTONE COUNTY-On Saturday, February 6 a cleanup was held at Buzzard Roost Road in Limestone County. The total amount of debris and trash that was collected was 29.9 tons or 59,800 lbs.

Statements from KALB, Limestone County Commissioner District 4 and Limestone County Commission chairperson:

Leigh Patterson – Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful (KALB) Executive Coordinator

“This is the largest cleanup that I personally have been involved with in the 8 years that I have been with KALB. There is no way that this could have taken place on such a large scale without the partnerships and community involvement that were present. I personally want to thank each and every person that participated. It shows that you truly care about our community. A huge thank you to my right-hand gal, Jenny Green, who helps me with EVERYTHING!

KALB would like to thank LaDon Townsend and his District 4 crew for their help in planning and implementing this cleanup. They brought large equipment and dump trailers to remove the trash and debris from the area and did so much more!  Thank you to the Limestone County Commission as a whole for your support.  Thank you to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office for the use of your ATV. It was very useful in getting back and forth from the tent to the volunteers! Thank you to Keep Alabama Beautiful for the cleanup supplies! Thank you to the West Limestone Volunteer Fire Department, Glenn Tarpley, and Cody Gibson for on-site first aid or emergency needs. Thank you to Christo’s Dari-Delite for donating burgers for all of our volunteers. It was a huge job to cook 120 burgers, especially on a busy Saturday!  Thank you to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center for letting us use their truck and dump trailer! Thank you to the volunteers from the community who brought their own large equipment to this event and worked so hard! Thank you to the KALB Commissioners who volunteered at our tent and to those who cleaned. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who took time out of their Saturday to help with this event.

This was not an easy cleanup. The terrain was not level and there was a ton of litter and debris. You rose to the challenge and made a huge impact on an area that has needed attention for a very long time. We are truly grateful for and humbled by the outpouring of support.

Let’s keep this going, Athens and Limestone County! Please don’t litter, don’t dump your debris on public or private lands, put garbage in a garbage can, and if you see litter, please pick it up!   Our next cleanup event is on March 6th – Trash Attack and Waterway Cleanup!”

LaDon Townsend – Limestone County District 4 County Commissioner – TRT 0:29

“A community clean up on Buzzard Roost today and it is a partnership between Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful and the Commission and we had a little over 100 volunteers show up and it has been a good turnout today. We are trying to get this road back in shape from the dumping that has happened over the last 25 to 30 years, probably longer than that. We had a great turnout and made lots of success. We were hoping to get this road back where it needs to be and stop the dumping on this road.”

Collin Daly – Limestone County Commission Chairman

“This was an amazing event organized by KALB that removed almost 30 tons of illegally dumped garbage in our beautiful county.  I would like to thank all the volunteers that came out and helped make this event such a great success.”
