Buddy Louis Looney, age 83, of Childersburg, Alabama passed away surrounded by family on September 9th, 2026. He was born on August 22, 1943 in Iron City, Tennessee to Andrew Looney and Dorothy McCain.
He attended Collinwood High School where he met and married the love of his life Margaret Joyce Harper on March 14, 1962. They shared 64 wonderful years of marriage together and raised two sons, Jimmy Wayne Looney and Macy Sheldon Looney.
After graduating high school in 1961, he joined the U.S. Navy where he was stationed on the USS Ranger (CV-4) and reached the rank of 3rd class Radarman. He served four years in the Navy, then returned back to the south to Tennessee and eventually settled in Childersburg, Alabama where he began a life-long career as a respected chartered member of the Boilermaker Local 108. He worked as boilermaker/pipe fitter for 40 years working for Kimberly-Clark and Bowater.
Buddy was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. He had a knack for creating and building home-made fishing lures and gadgets used for fishing. Margaret and Buddy enjoyed taking trips to casinos in Biloxi and Las Vegas, in addition to early USS Ranger reunions. They loved music and dancing (especially Margaret) and were avid concert goers. They attended Cartersville Baptist Church for several years where Buddy served as the treasurer. He was also a Master Mason of Coosa Valley Lodge No. 929.
Buddy was above all the most amazing, patient, and loving father, Paw Paw, and great-grandfather. He shepherded the family, and every child and grandchild would often look to him for guidance. He was our HERO. He is survived by his wife Margaret Looney and son Macy Looney. Sister Joan Cooper (George). Grandchildren Marisa Barron (Michael), Ian Looney (Rachelle), Katherine Looney (Brandon), Nick Looney (Jenea), and Isabella Looney (Kyle), Rafe Looney, and Tatton Looney. And great-grandchildren Drakeston, Kamden, Clayton, Scarlett, and Ivy. He is preceded in death by his son Jimmy Looney, sister Judy Lovelace, and brother Larry Looney.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday 19th, 2026 at Loretto Memorial Chapel, 110 North Military Street Loretto, Tennessee 38469. Visitation will be held from 1-3pm, with a service following at 3pm. Burial to take place at Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers and arrangements can be sent to Loretto Memorial Chapel.
