Congressman Brooks said, “Increasing seniority and placement on key committees helps me protect and promote America’s exceptionalism in space, national security, and the Tennessee Valley’s roughly 35,000 defense and space jobs. I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve on these influential committees and look forward to working with my colleagues to address both Tennessee Valley needs and the challenges America faces.”

conferenceBrooks’ House Armed Services subcommittees are Strategic Forces as well as Emerging Threats and Capabilities. The Strategic Forces Subcommittee oversees strategic weapons, space programs, ballistic missile defense, the associated weapons systems sustainment, and Department of Energy national security programs. More particularly, Strategic Forces oversees Redstone Arsenal’s Missile Defense Agency, the Missile and Space Intelligence Center, and Space and Missile Defense Command. The Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee has jurisdiction over America’s global threats, amongst other things. As a member of HASC and these two subcommittees, Brooks is well-positioned to help with oversight of the National Defense Authorization Act, which totaled $577.1 billion in spending in fiscal year 2015.

Brooks’ Science, Space, and Technology subcommittees are Energy and Space, where House-Committee-SSTBrooks is also vice-chairman. Brooks’ Space Subcommittee has oversight responsibilities for aeronautical and astronautical research and development, including space policy. The Space Subcommittee has oversight of NASA, including the Marshall Space Flight Center, and all other NASA centers. Brooks’ Energy Subcommittee oversees energy research, development, and demonstration projects, and has jurisdiction over the Department of Energy laboratories and science activities, fossil energy research and development, clean coal technology, and pipeline research. Space and Energy are SST’s premier subcommittees. Combined, the Space and Energy subcommittees have jurisdiction over almost 70% of the SST committee’s $40 billion budget authority. NASA’s budget approximates $18 billion and the Department of Energy (R&D) budget approximates $9 billion.

Brooks’ House Foreign Affairs subcommittees are the Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee and Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee. Combined, these two subcommittees have jurisdiction over America’s foreign relations with a large swath of the world’s countries and population.
