HUNTSVILLE – On Friday, May 26 Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) hosted a reception at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library in honor of this year’s North Alabama appointees to the U.S. Service Academies. Twelve outstanding men and women were selected to represent North Alabama at the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, and West Point.

Congressman Mo Brooks said, “Alabama’s 5th Congressional District is fortunate to claim twelve outstanding students that have received appointments to the 2017 freshman classes at the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, and West Point. Using West Point as an example: Of Alabama’s seven Congressional Districts, AL-05 is sending the most candidates, 44% of the state’s total! Congratulations to these exceptional scholars, athletes, and leaders who have chosen to go to a service academy and serve our country. We are so proud of this high-achieving group of students.”

Applicants to all service academies, except the United States Coast Guard Academy, are required to obtain a nomination. Nominating sources include the President, the Vice President, Senators, and members of the House of Representatives. Congressman Brooks established a nominating board to review applications, interview prospective candidates, and make final selection of Alabama District 5 nominees to be submitted to the academies. Nominations are determined using the competitive method with all nominees submitted unranked to the academies, allowing equal opportunity for each candidate nominated from the district.
