Brenda Ann Buchanan Flora passed from this world to the next at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Nashville Tennessee, on May 18, 2021. Born on March 16, 1947, in Cullman, Alabama, to parents Malcolm Buchanan and Kate Montgomery Buchanan, she grew up in Columbus, Georgia, where she spent her high school years and the early years of her employment. She graduated from Jordan High School in Columbus, Georgia, and later attended Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Alabama. Along with her husband and daughters, she moved to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama on October 18, 1985, later moving to Harvest, Alabama.
After working for several years in the banking industry, Brenda joined the civilian work force as a Department of the Army Civilian Budget Analyst, receiving numerous awards and citations for her meritorious service. She retired from Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, in 2009.
Brenda took her greatest joy surrounded by her children and grandchildren and by her pet dogs and cats. She was a beautiful, warm, smart, and loving lady, always able to laugh at herself and to bring laughter to her family members through her charming sense of humor. She loved shopping, always in search of a bargain, reading, and attending University of Alabama, Huntsville, ice hockey games, as well of those high school and college hockey games in which her grandson, Stevenson, played.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Malcom and Kate Buchanan, as well as her brother, George Buchanan, and sister Zelma Buchanan Woodard. She is survived by her husband of thirty-seven years, Major (retired) Raymond Stevenson (Steve) Flora of Harvest, Alabama; daughter, Angela Flora Stevens and husband, Billy Stevens, of Madison, Alabama; daughter, Leigh Flora Stevens of Athens, Alabama; grandchildren, Tyler Boeskool of Athens, Alabama, Stevenson Stevens with significant other, Lyla Gaylor and Brenda’s great grandson Dorian, of Hueytown, Alabama, Kayla Stevens and her significant other, Blake Bradford, of Hartselle, Alabama, and Payten Poole of Madison, Alabama. She is also survived by her brother, James B. Buchanan, of Cullman, Alabama.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 23rd, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama. A graveside service on 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 24th, at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, Alabama.
