EVA-On Tuesday, October 6 Governor Robert Bentley has awarded $75,000 to help the town of Eva alleviate a health and safety problem. The Community Development Block Grant, awarded by Bentley, will enable the town of about 500 people to complete emergency repairs at its wastewater treatment plant.
Grant funds will be used to replace a leaking fiberglass septic tank that serves the town. The leak was discovered in May after raw sewage spilled into the surrounding ground. The town has been able to contain the leak, but not without reducing the capacity of the tank to a level below where the leak was detected.
“CDBG funding is an important resource to help local communities, and this grant will help Eva solve a potentially hazardous problem,” Bentley said. “Local governments often encounter crucial problems and lack the resources to provide solutions. CDBG funding is critical to help communities succeed.”
The town will purchase a 45,000-gallon concrete tank and sewage pump. Once the new tank is installed, the older tank will be repaired and placed back into use.
Bentley notified Mayor Gary Livingston that the grant had been approved. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
In addition to distributing CDBG funding once a year to Alabama cities and counties on a competitive level, ADECA reserves some funding to assist local governments with critical-need projects and infrastructure improvements necessary for new or expanding industries to provide additional jobs in the area. ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
