BIRMINGHAM-On Tuesday, January 31 the Birmingham City Council passed with a unanimous resolution to make Birmingham a sanctuary city

The stance taken by the city received applause from the crowd gathered in the chamber. The decision comes after several residents spoke in support of the resolution.

The city also included  plans to set up a task force “to ensure a safe, secure and welcoming community for everyone, promoting respectful relations and collaboration between community members and those providing public safety services.”

The council’s resolution is a policy position, not a law, and does not compel Birmingham police to disobey and state or federal law.

Governor Robert Bentley on Tuesday released a statement in response to the Birmingham City Council declaring the city to be a Sanctuary City. The full statement is below.

“President Trump has already taken decisive and necessary action to enforce our nation’s immigration laws,” Governor Bentley said. “Alabama will not support sanctuary cities or institutions that harbor or shelter illegal immigrants, and are in clear violation of the laws of the nation.”
