Bettye Elizabeth Moore Bettye Elizabeth Moore, 82, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Decatur Morgan Hospital.
She was born on August 27, 1943, in Moulton, Alabama, to Fred L. Riley and Mary Ellen Byars Riley. She was the granddaughter of Fred L. Riley and Maura Laura Royster Riley, and George Daniel Byars and Bessie Lee Stewart Byars.
Bettye attended Lawrence County schools and earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from Calhoun Junior College. She later received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from Athens State University. She devoted approximately 40 years of service to Decatur Morgan Hospital and the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Dedicated to serving others, Bettye was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), the Daughter’s of the American Revolution (DAR), and the Order of the Eastern Star (OES), where she served in numerous offices. In her spare time, she enjoyed writing poetry. Music was a significant part of her life, and her message to others was simple: “Sing for Joy.”
Bettye shared 50 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Vernon L. Moore. Together they raised their family, and she was a proud mother to her sons, Justin and David.
She is survived by her sons, Justin Moore and David Moore, as well as several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon L. Moore; her daughter, Diane; her brothers, George, Daniel, and Freddie Jr.; and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Decatur Brown Service Funeral Home, with Reverend Wayne Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
The family welcomes memorial donations to Central United Methodist Church, 616 Jackson Street Decatur, AL 35601, in honor of Bettye Elizabeth Moore.
