Bettye Carolyn Megar Charlton, 96, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening April 5th after a brief illness. Mrs. Charlton was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the wife of the late Ernest King Charlton, Jr. (Sonny). Bettye and Sonny had a Christmas wedding on December 23, 1946. They were happily married for 63 years before his death in 2009. Mrs. Charlton is also predeceased by her parents, Thomas Morris Megar, Sr. and Marjorie Williams Megar; brother, Thomas Morris Megar, Jr. (Pete); and sister, Josephine Megar Barnes.
The Charltons moved to Huntsville for his job with the United States Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal in the mid 1950s. They built their dream home in the Piedmont neighborhood in 1964. She was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Charlton enjoyed playing bridge with friends, traveling, reading, and was happiest being with her grandchildren. She was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church.
Mrs. Charlton is survived by her daughter, Dianne C. Farris and husband, William M. Farris; son, David Lynn Charlton and wife, Laura Lively Charlton, all of Huntsville; and grandchildren, Shay Farris Gartman and husband, Randy W. Gartman, and Kathleen Farris Woodruff, all of Homewood, Tyler Lively Charlton of Austin, Texas, and John Cary Charlton of Atlanta, Georgia; and great-grandchildren, Ann Gartman, R.C. Gartman, Evie Gartman, Gage Gartman, and Nicholas Woodruff, all of Homewood.
A graveside service for Mrs. Charlton will be held at noon, Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Maple Hill Cemetery.
